San Francisco-based startup Canvas is transforming one of the most labor-intensive tasks in construction: drywall finishing. By combining advanced sensing, AI, and collaborative robots from Universal Robots, the company has built a system that can cut drywall finishing schedules by up to 60% while improving worker safety and precision.

Breaking Tradition with Robotics

Drywall finishing usually takes five to seven days of manual spraying and sanding. Canvas’ robotic solution reduces that to just two days for both Level 4 and Level 5 finishes. The system applies a defined layer of joint compound in one pass on the first day, lets it dry, and then sands on the second day.

Instead of workers repeatedly returning to the same wall, the machine handles the heavy lifting, while humans supervise and refine details. This approach reduces labor by around 40% and ensures higher consistency across thousands of square feet.

Why Construction Needs Robots Now

Construction has long been slower to adopt automation than industries like logistics or manufacturing. According to CEO Kevin Albert, the pressure comes from labor shortages: “We need to build twice as much in the next 40 years, but two people are retiring for every one entering the industry.”

Canvas’ collaborative system answers that call. With a week of training, apprentices can operate the robot independently. This user-friendly interface makes automation accessible even for workers new to robotics.

Safety and Worker Benefits

Drywall finishing is physically punishing. Many workers end their careers with shoulder or back injuries. By letting the cobot handle overhead spraying and sanding, Canvas reduces repetitive strain and serious injury risks. Labor unions have embraced the solution, seeing it as a way to protect workers while improving productivity.

Powered by Universal Robots’ Cobots

At the heart of the system is the UR10e collaborative robot arm. It is lightweight yet powerful enough to work up to 15 feet high without tipping over. Built-in force control allows the robot to handle delicate drywall materials without damage.

The open software platform gives developers deep access to sensors and control systems, enabling Canvas to fine-tune performance for the unique challenges of construction sites.

What’s Next for Canvas

The company is already working on its 1200CX self-driving platform, a taller robot that will reach over 20 feet — helping to reduce fall hazards on high ceilings. Future updates aim to expand into painting, combining multiple tasks into one automated workflow to further accelerate project timelines.
