Researchers from Tokyo Institute of Technology and Virginia Tech have collaboratively developed a Smart Mobility Digital Twin that mirrors real-time traffic conditions in cyberspace. This innovation facilitates a hybrid autonomous driving system, combining self-driving capabilities with remote operation. By integrating local vehicle sensors with global environmental data through vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, the system enhances traffic safety and efficiency. The research, published in IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Vehicles, marks a significant advancement in applying digital twin technology to mobility, promising a safer and more efficient future for autonomous driving systems.
